Site author on her 5th birthday, tossing aside the Barbie dolls About the "That '70s Doll" Web Page
My Story
I was re-introduced to Dawn through the web; I don't remember how it happened, but in 1998 I saw a mention of a Dawn doll and suddenly, there I was: 1973, standing in front of the toy department at Mervyns (back when they had a toy department), gazing up at Model Agency Maureen. I thought was the most beautiful doll in the world. I had to have her then, and, consumed with the memory, had to have her now. I searched the web for Dawn web sites, finding several great sites (thanks Tonnvane!) and the new Dawn newsgroup. My Dawn dolls didn't survive my childhood, so I began collecting them again. I was already using eBay to collect antique photos, and began buying Dawn dolls through eBay sellers, too. It was only a matter of minutes after finding Dawn that I began planning how to create a world for her...dioramas, magazine covers, stills from her "movie roles", and much more. I filled a notebook with ideas and sketches, and began learning how to construct miniatures. All of this happened in less than two months. I like to immerse myself. I created this site to give myself an outlet for my artistic interpretations of Dawn. I also wanted to pass on some of the tips I've learned on collecting, restoring, and displaying Dawn dolls. I hope you find this site helpful. Since creating That 70s Doll in 1998, I completed my Dawn collection and moved on to other projects. Despite the fact that I am no longer actively collecting or involved with the Dawn Doll community, I keep this site running because I believe it offers useful information for collectors. If you want to learn what I'm up to now, you can visit me at alixnorth.com.
Acknowledgments
This site is made possible by the support of my virtual Dawn buddies from the late 90s, and Kathy who doesn't collect dolls but listened to my latest wild Dawn idea and sometimes added her own inspired thoughts. Oh, yeah, and Topper, who made all of this possible. All of the images on this site were created by me during countless hours spent with a digital camera, scanner, and Photoshop. The drawing of Dawn in the navigation bar to the left was scanned from a Dawn doll case, then modified. The "That '70s Doll" lettering was created with Adobe Illustrator. |
