Denise's BioDenise was adopted as a baby by a prominent San Francisco family and raised in the Bay Area. Her parents were an older couple (Maude and Dick "Topper" Vaughn) who could not have children, and they lavished their love freely on Denise. By her late teens, Denise found the attention a little suffocating, so she moved to New York to pursue her future. In New York she worked in retail jobs (women's apparel and shoes) while she studied interior design. She was discovered by Dawn's modeling agency when Dawn was on a model search, and became a popular runway model. When her father's health took a bad turn, she moved back to San Francisco. She was relieved to be near her family again after her time away. She took over management of Topper's, the family's upscale department store. In two years she transformed the store from an elegant but aging relic to an exciting, one-of-a-kind store for the year 2000. Denise's father recovered, but he left management of the store to Denise, and focused his own work on business development. Topper Towers is one of his many buildings. Denise is a dedicated worker, fascinated with the field of management and fashion merchandising. She has been featured in several magazines (including Money and Working Woman) for her success in business. When not at the shop, Denise relaxes with her friends, taking her hair down to go dancing at Club D or take a trip to Napa with Melanie. She is good friends with Kip, and often assists her in promoting philanthropic endeavors. Many people don't know that Jill Sobule actually wrote a song about Denise (using another name) called "Karen by Night." As indicated by the song, Denise has a passion for leather, and a decided fondness for young blond studs.
